My hands split every winter. I finally stopped reapplying every morning.

That is not a figure of speech. You are prepping, your hands are wet all shift, and at some point you notice pink in the sink and it is coming from you. I started wearing gloves on my break so nobody would ask.

I want to say up front that I am not a skincare person. I own one product. This is the first thing I have ever written about a jar of anything.

Aquaphor. Every night for two winters. It sat on top, it got on the sheets, and by ten the next morning my hands were tight again.

CeraVe. Eucerin. The thick one in the tub with the blue lid. A prescription cream that stung so badly when I put it on cracked skin that I stopped after four days.

Cotton gloves over ointment overnight. Coconut oil, which made me itch. A humidifier. Cutting my showers down to five minutes.

Every single one worked for about an hour, and I honestly started to think the problem was that I was doing something wrong. That I was not consistent enough. That I was too cheap.

Someone in a group I am in mentioned tallow. I ignored it for about four months.

I know exactly how it sounds. Rendered beef fat. On your hands. In 2026. I remember thinking that this was the point where I had officially run out of ideas, and then I ordered it anyway, because I had officially run out of ideas.

I got the unscented one because I react to a lot of things. I have since bought the citrus too, for the bag, because it smells faintly of orange peel and not of anything else.

Night one I used way too much, because I was used to lotion. It sat on my skin and felt greasy and I thought, well, that is that.

Night two I used about a pea, warmed it between my palms first, and put it on while my hands were still damp from washing. That is the whole trick and nobody tells you.

By the fourth night I stopped putting it on before bed, not because I forgot, but because my hands did not feel like they needed it. The cracks at my knuckles closed over the following week. They have not reopened since, and it is February.

That is it. That is the entire dramatic story. Nothing glowed. I did not take a before photo because I had no idea it was going to work.

I went looking for why afterwards, because I wanted to know whether I had wasted two winters.

Lotion is mostly water. To hold water and oil together in a bottle you need emulsifiers, and those are related to the stuff in soap. So the water evaporates off your skin, takes a bit of your own moisture with it, and the emulsifier is not doing your skin any favours either. That is why it lasts an hour.

This has no water in it at all. Nothing to evaporate. The honey holds water and the tallow keeps it from leaving.

So it was not that I was inconsistent. I was using a product built to feel light, when what my hands needed was something built to stay put.

I am on my third jar. I bought the double pack the second time because one lives at home and one lives in my bag at work.

My hands look like hands again. My daughter borrowed it for her elbows. My coworker asked what I changed and I told her the same thing I am telling you, including the part where it sounds insane.

If you have been reapplying something every morning for years and your hands still split every winter, it might not be you either.
